Extra-credit activities
Rules
Ø During this second term, I
may include one or more in-class activities that may give you extra-credit.
Ø Extra-credit activities will
not be announced in advance. Any one that does not come to class the day of the
extra-credit activity may NOT do the extra-credit activity, even in case of illness
or other excruciating reasons. This is not an exam or for regular-credit
assignment, in which case being sick or having other valid reasons may qualify students
for a make-up. In other words, extra-credit activities are considered a
privilege for those present in class and not a right.
Ø Likewise, no extensions will
be granted for the extra-credit activities.
Ø Each extra-credit activity
may grant up to 2 extra points, which will be available toward the final grade,
that is, after everything has been calculated and the final grade is computed
out of 100.
Ø Students who do not do the extra-credit
activities will not be penalized.
Ø Extra credit points will be
used if and only if the number of points added to the total for the course moves
a student grade as follows:
Original final grade without the extra credit |
Final grade with extra credit |
F and D |
C- |
C-, C |
C |
C+ |
B- |
B- |
B |
B |
B+ |
Ø Extra credit may not be used
to reach an A-, A, or an A+, as these grades must reflect considerable evidence
of original thinking and demonstrated outstanding capacity to analyze and
synthesize obtained during regular evaluation assignments.
Ø The evaluation criteria for
the extra-credit activities will be based on the evaluation criteria for the
midterm tests as outlined in the course syllabus. It is expected that the
students’ work be of very high quality to earn extra credits.
